As Associate Director of the Weitzman Institute at Community Health Center, Inc. (CHC), Dr. April Joy G. Damian is responsible for providing leadership and supporting the growth and development of Weitzman's research team, with a strong emphasis on health equity. Dr. Damian concurrently has a faculty appointment in the Department of Mental Health at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She also serves as the Chair of the AcademyHealth Public Health Systems Research IG and is currently on the 2020 Annual Research Meeting (ARM) Planning Committee. Prior to joining CHC, Dr. Damian was Director of Quality Innovation at the National Quality Forum (NQF), a not-for-profit membership organization that works to catalyze healthcare improvement through quality measurement and reporting. While at NQF, Dr. Damian served as the in-house subject matter expert on social determinants of health (SDOH) and led quality measurement and implementation efforts to advance SDOH integration in healthcare policy, payment models, and clinical practice. Prior to joining NQF, Dr. Damian was awarded a NIH grant to serve as the Principal Investigator of the first mixed methods evaluation of SAMHSA’s trauma-informed care training intervention and learning collaborative. Her areas of expertise include implementation science, mixed methods, health equity, and mental/behavioral health, particularly trauma-informed care and resilience. Dr. Damian completed her PhD in the Department of Mental Health at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Masters in Medical Sciences at Harvard Medical School, and graduated Phi Beta Kappa and as a Truman Scholar from the University of California, Berkeley with a Bachelors of Arts in Ethnic Studies, Highest Honors.
