Program Description: 

The Mayo Clinic Post Graduate Year 1 (PGY1) Pharmacy Practice Residency in Primary Care program is designed to provide students with high-quality didactic and clinical experiences in order to create well-rounded, fully competent clinical pharmacists who are able to serve a multitude of ambulatory care patient populations.  This residency provides opportunities for general training in many areas of ambulatory care and during each rotation, residents work closely with their preceptor, highly qualified pharmacists, physicians and other allied health care professionals.

During this program, residents will:

  • Develop expertise, knowledge and skills in a broad range of ambulatory care therapeutics through direct patient care
  • Contribute to an interdisciplinary health care team offering patient-specific interventions to optimize drug therapy outcomes
  • Provide drug information to the interdisciplinary team in an environment based on teamwork and mutual respect
  • Enhance skills in conducting clinical research and a medication use evaluation
  • Strengthen communication skills by presenting formal and informal lectures, writing a professional manuscript, and leading interdisciplinary discussions
  • Develop pharmacy practice management skills by leading various committees, establishing policies and understanding the pharmacy practice philosophy
  • Counsel and educate patients and health care providers on medication use, monitoring parameters and cost effectiveness
  • Provide comprehensive medication therapy management services to a variety of specialty areas

Established in 2011, this program is pending accreditation from the America Society of Health-System Pharmacists.  The residency program is continuously evaluated for improvement opportunities to ensure graduates make a seamless transition into primary care or ambulatory practice settings.  One candidate a year is selected on a competitive basis to participate in this residency program.
