Medical Home Makes Dollars and Sense

Last week the House Energy and Commerce Committee released a proposal that would replace the current Medicare physician payment system, and identifies the medical home as an effective, value-based primary care model. The PCPCC expressed its support for the legislation earlier this week, and also reinforced the medical home’s direct and tangible effects on quality, outcomes, and costs with latest update of our Summary of Medical Home Cost & Quality Results: 2010-2013.

To wrap up our month-long dedication to behavioral health, we look forward to hosting our July National Briefing at 11AM ET. This month's briefing will feature Kathy Dodsworth-Rugani of HealthTeamWorks, who will discuss lessons learned from primary care practices that have successfully integrated primary care and mental health services.

Medicare Makeover Moves Forward in House
On Tuesday lawmakers from both sides of the House approved a draft bill that would repeal Medicare's Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR), and replace it with a more stable physician payment system. The bill also provides rewards for coordinating and managing care for patients with chronic diseases. and recognizes the medical home as an alternative payment model.

The PCPCC provided comments on the proposal, indicating its support for the transition, and also emphasizing the critical role of the medical home model in improving quality of care for complex patients; improvements that continue to demonstrate significant improvements in quality and reducing health care costs.

Resource Update:
Medical Home Impact on Quality and Costs
This week we released the latest update of medical home cost and quality results, including new evidence from initiatives led by health plans, health systems, federal agencies, and state Medicaid programs. The results include impact on: (1) cost and utilization (e.g., hospital admissions and readmissions, avoidable emergency room visits, health care costs); and (2) care quality and outcomes (e.g., improved access, patient experience, provider satisfaction, and prevention).
