Message from the President and CEO

Dear Members and Friends,

Thank you to the nearly 300 leaders who attended the PCPCC conference in Washington, D.C. on October 11th-12th. In addition to learning from innovators about how they are putting the recently released Shared Principles into practice, we were excited to gather input from attendees about their views on the highest leverage policy strategies to achieve a new vision for primary care.

Through interactive, crowd-sourcing techniques, we collected 20 of the most popular policy ideas from leaders across all stakeholder groups. Following the conference, the PCPCC Board and Executive Members outlined a subset of these and other ideas by considering their aim, metrics of success, and potential partnerships. These ideas will be further winnowed based on how the PCPCC can uniquely contribute, the organizations’s core competencies and the resources required to implement the policy strategies.

In the coming months, PCPCC staff will seek input from Executive Members and the broader field to further develop policy options for the Board of Directors’ consideration in January. In February, the PCPCC will announce its 2018 policy agenda.

Chris Adamec, the PCPCC’s new Director of Policy, will be working closely with me on this effort. Chris comes to the PCPCC most recently from the Healthcare Leadership Council (HLC). Prior to HLC, Chris worked at the Alzheimer’s Association, on Capitol Hill, and on several political campaigns. Please join me in welcoming Chris!

PCPCC and ABIM Foundation's Choosing Wisely Announce Partnership

Last week, at the Health Affairs Briefing - “Choosing Wisely: Opportunity and Challenges in Curbing Medical Overuse” - the PCPCC announced its partnership with the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Foundation. This partnership will leverage PCPCC’s role in the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Transforming Clinical Practice Initiative (TCPI) to advance patient and family engagement.

TCPI is a four-year CMS-funded program designed to assist more than 140,000 clinicians in practice transformation in anticipation of value-based payment arrangements. The PCPCC and the ABIM Foundation will collaborate on developing and implementing effective approaches to engage patients and families in decisions about health services addressed in Choosing Wisely programs.

The PCPCC offers in-person and online training, as well as technical assistance. The aim is to foster meaningful partnerships between clinicians and patients, families, and community-based organizations to reduce opioids, unnecessary antibiotics, and low-value imaging as well as other services that are not necessary, redundant or even harmful.

Webinar This Thursday - Shared Principles of Primary Care

The Shared Principles of Primary Care is a powerful framework that charts a new chapter for advanced primary care. The Principles were developed through a multi-stakeholder collaborative effort, with leadership from the Primary Care Collaborative (PCPCC) and Family Medicine for American’s Health (FMAHealth), as well as input from organizations that span all aspects of healthcare including consumers and payers. These Principles include seven important attributes of advanced primary care: person and family centered, continuous, comprehensive and equitable, team based and collaborative, coordinated and integrated, accessible, and high value. To date, over 240 organizations have signed on to these Principles that advance a new vision of primary care.

This webinar will provide participants with a deeper understanding of the rationale behind the Principles, why they matter in today’s rapidly changing healthcare environment, and how they will connect to PCPCC's future policy agenda.
