True Evidence Lasts Forever

February got off to a great start as our stakeholders and the media continued to share and discuss our latest 2015 Annual Evidence Report. The publication, released on Jan. 30 at a Congressional briefing, generated a warm reception and some great buzz in the news and on social media. As federal agencies and policymakers look to advanced primary care models as a solution to climbing health care costs, the publication provides a relevant and impressive snapshot of the primary care patient-centered medical home evidence base. For your future education and advocacy efforts, we compiled a useful suite of Evidence Report resources as well as the related news clips – be sure to check them out below.  

This year began with important developments in health policy that impacts primary care. Building from the announcements in January on the need to expand value based payments in the public and private sector, in early February, the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology unveiled its preliminary roadmap to achieve HIT interoperability by 2017. In addition, AcademyHealth hosted its annual National Health Policy Conference in Washington D.C., where I had the opportunity to moderate a break out session on the future of accountable care and primary care transformation. The three-day conference convened industry leaders from across the health care sector, and included David Lansky from the Pacific Business Group on Health who discussed their latest report - published by the Milbank Memorial Fund - that focuses on engaging self-insured employers in multi-payer reform.

The Milbank Memorial Fund also recently released a report on the integration of primary care into behavioral health settings for individuals with serious mental illness. We've invited the author of the report, Martha Gerrity, MD, MPH, PhD to discuss the report today on our National Briefing at 1 p.m. EST. We would love for you to join us.

ICYMI: New PCPCC Evidence Report Released
At a Congressional Briefing on Jan. 30, the PCPCC released its 2015 Annual Evidence Report titled, The Patient-Centered Medical Home's Impact on Cost and Quality, Review of Evidence 2013-2014. The publication highlights new evidence from primary care patient-centered medical home initiatives taking place in both public and private markets throughout the United States.

Stories from the Nexus 
Next month, in collaboration with the National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education, the PCPCC is releasing Stories from the Nexus, a five-part podcast series based on the PCPCC's publication Progress and Promise: Profiles in Interprofessional Health Training to Deliver Patient-Centered Primary Care.

The series, to be released in April, includes interviews with representatives from three of the seven programs highlighted in the publication and provides an in-depth look at each program's experiences, opportunities, and challenges.

Look out for more information and the release of the first podcast toward the end of the month.

PCPCC on the Road
PCPCC President, Paul Grundy, MD, MPH, has a busy month ahead. At the beginning of the March he will attend the 2015 Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Annual Educational Conference. He'll later keynote the Kentuckiana Health Collaborative conference and speak at the National Conference on Health Care and Domestic Violence. He will conclude the month at the Medical Group Management Association Business of Care Delivery Conference in Austin, TX. Follow Paul @Paul_PCPCC to stay in touch!

PCPCC CEO Marci Nielsen, PhD, MPH will head to the Southern College Health Association Conference in North Carolina to speak to 250 physicians, nurses, and administrators from student health centers across the southeast about training the next generation of health professionals. CMS Seeks Comments on Advanced Primary Care Models
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services released a request for information on advanced primary care models. The agency is seeking public comment from a broad range of industry stakeholders and specifically wants feedback on ways to:
  • encourage more comprehensive primary care delivery;
  • improve the care of patients with complex needs; 
  • facilitate robust connections to the medical neighborhood and community-based services; and 
  • move payment from encounter-based towards value-driven, population-based care.

Engaging Self-Insured Employers

The Milbank Memorial Fund recently released a new report titled All Aboard: Engaging Self-Insured Employers in Multi-Payer Reform. 

The publication examines the extent to which self-insured employers are participating in the kind of delivery system transformation envisioned by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) State Innovation Models (SIM) program.
