Why We Need Robust Primary Care, and What Congress Can Do to Help

A Congressional Member and Staff Hill Briefing

From the offices of Representative Jim McDermott and Senator Jack Reed:

The United States is experiencing a crisis in primary care.  While low-cost, high-quality health systems in other developed nations emphasize prevention and wellness through robust primary care, the American system incentivizes avoidable and costly services and hyperspecialization.  We know that we can alleviate this crisis by reforming our health-care delivery system, as well as our systems of educating and training providers. I encourage you and your health staff to attend the following briefing, to hear from thought leaders on what role Congress can play in continuing to reform health care and improve the nation’s health.

Panelists:

  • Andrew Morris-Singer, M.D. Brigham and Women’s Hospital, President of Primary Care Progress
  • James C. Welsh, M.D., MBA, MPH, Chair and Associate Professor, Department of Family Medicine, Georgetown University Medical Center
  • Jill Rubin Hummel, Vice President, Payment Innovation, WellPoint
  • Christine Bechtel, Vice President, National Partnership for Women and Families
  • Closing Remarks: Marci Nielsen, CEO, Patient-Centered Primary Care Collaborative
