The Hidalgo Medical Services Family Medicine Residency program is specifically designed in the “1+2” format to offer top quality training in the urban setting in at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque during the intern year, followed by a two-year robust, community training experience in Silver City. Decentralizing resident education to southwest New Mexico adds value to the education experience by ensuring that each resident has more community-relevant experiences and training that models the generalist-specialist relationship.
This residency program provides full-spectrum family medicine training focusing on the unique aspects of the practice of medicine in frontier and rural communities. The educational experience is sensitive to the unique multicultural environment of New Mexico, while meeting or exceeding the standards of quality care and professionalism. This program is recognized by the Health Resources and Services Administration as the first Teaching Health Center graduate medical education program in New Mexico.
This program just launched its first year of resident training, and program faculty and administration engage in regular quality improvement evaluation processes to address barriers and resolve them as they occur.
