Jeff Markuns is the Deputy Director of the Primary Health Care Performance Initiative (PHCPI - www.phcperformanceinitiative.org), a partnership between the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the World Health Organization and the World Bank group, in collaboration with Ariadne Labs and Results for development. Dr. Markuns helps to lead PHCPI’s Secretariat in promoting the use of data and measurement to support further improvements in primary health care, particularly in low and middle income countries. Currently, PHCPI is developing a Vital Signs Profile to identify a set of leading indicators and composites to assist countries in better understanding their primary health care systems’ performance, working with Trailblazer countries to create these profiles, and outlining a series of Improvement Strategies to then identify approaches to make improvements using these results. Dr. Markuns is also the Executive Director of Boston University’s Global Health Collaborative, with a decade of experience in grassroots primary care system strengthening and a special focus on workforce capacity building throughout southeast Asia in Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar as well as in southern Africa in Lesotho.
