AARP is a membership-based organization of 38 million members. Its work is widespread across issues affecting Americans over the age of 50: economic security; health care; access to affordable, quality long-term care; creating and maintaining livable communities; consumer protections; caregiving; and ensuring that our democracy works better for all.
An important way that AARP works in these areas, some of which relate to primary care, is advocacy. The Health Security team of AARP’s Public Policy Institute in Washington, D.C., conducts research and policy analysis and brings together thought leaders to develop and advance AARP’s health care policy agenda.
AARP reported in its 2019 annual report that 26 state legislatures passed 40 AARP-supported bills relating to prescription drug affordability; AARP fought for passage of 139 new laws or regulations that applied to an estimated 38 million family caregivers; and that there were 25 million visits to AARP’s online Caregiving Resource Center.
A key perspective that the organization brings to the table at the PCC is the consumer perspective – the primary care patient voice – as well as its considerable policy and communication assets.
