April 25, the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) published a report on demonstration projects implemented by the CMMI to test new approaches to healthcare delivery. According to the GAO, 37 pilots have been tested or are in the process of being tested by CMMI, but just six of these models successfully reduce spending and improve quality of care to the degree that they may be expanded beyond the demonstration phase. CMS' goal for this year is to recommend at least six additional models for expansion.
