This morning we'll officially wrap up PCPCC's eHealth month during our Monthly National Briefing, which includes a presentation from RAND's Dr. Art Kellermann and Vanguard Health's Spencer Jones. Back in January, they co-authored a Health Affairs article: "What It Will Take To Achieve the As-Yet-Unfulfilled Promises Of Health Information Technology," which addressed the barriers health IT faces in achieving its full potential impact on quality and costs.

They attribute the lack of impact to several systemic barriers, but suggest that the benefits of eHealth can be achieved by addressing several core issues. To learn more and have your questions answered, join us at 11AM ET, and if you can't make it, we'll post the recording here later today.

The 4 Essentials of Pediatric
Medical Home Transformation

In a new study from the Annals of Family Medicine, authors studied twelve primary care practices 6-7 years after their participation in a national medical home collaborative. Their evaluation identified four essential medical home attributes that sustained a medical home delivery model, they include: (1) a culture of quality improvement, (2) family-centered care with parents as improvement partners, (3) team-based care, and (4) care coordination.

While meeting medical home recognition criteria was helpful, the highest-performing practices maintained their commitment to continuous quality improvement, family partnership skills, an attitude of teamwork, and strong care coordination.

New eHealth Tools Help Improve Medication Adherence

According to estimates from the New England Healthcare Institute, about $290 billion is wasted annually on hospital and doctor visits for patients who do not comply with their medication regimen. The Wall Street Journal reports that several eHealth startups are developing new technologies to improve adherence, including:

A data analytics platform that analyzes claims and clinical data to identify individuals at highest risk of failing to comply with physicians' orders;

A mobile health application that allows users to earn points toward prizes for adhering to medication regimens; and

Tiny digestible sensors that can be placed in pills and can transmit pill digestion data to physicians and family members.
