Rachelle “Shelly” Spiro is Director of the Pharmacy e-Health Information Technology Collaborative (Collaborative). The Collaborative is an organization of 9 national pharmacy associations and 3 associate members focused on assuring the meaningful use of standardized electronic health records (EHR) that supports safe, efficient, and effective medication use, continuity of care, and provide access to the patient care services of pharmacists with other members of the interdisciplinary patient care team. In addition, to assure the pharmacist’s role of providing patient-care services is integrated into the National health information technology (HIT) interoperable framework.Spiro is the President and owner of Spiro Consulting, Inc. an industry consulting firm specializing in Long Term and Post Acute Care (LTPAC) Pharmacy services and Health Information Technology (HIT) including all aspects of HIT, e-Prescribing, Medication Therapy Management (MTM), reimbursement and technology standards development. Before opening her own consulting firm she was a hospital, long-term-care and home- healthcare pharmacy corporate senior director and consultant pharmacist. Spiro is active in national pharmacy associations, standards development organizations (NCPDP, HL7 and X12) and is a leader in Pharmacy HIT. She is the immediate past President and Chairman of the Board of the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists (ASCP); Past Co-Chair of NCPDP LTC Work Group14; member of Pharmacist Services Technical Advisory Coalition (PSTAC); PSTAC representative to ASC X12, Chair of the NCPDP MTM Communications Task Group, Health Level 7 (HL7) EHR Work Group Pharmacist/Pharmacy Provider EHR Functional Profile Project Team Lead, was a consultant to the CMS-AHRQ LTC e-Prescribing pilot; and author of several articles relating to various professional pharmacy, LTC information systems and electronic prescribing topics.
