Join the Alliance for Health Reform for a live webinar that will give you the latest on a flurry of state legislation to allow nurse practitioners and other medical providers to do more to care for patients.

More than 25 million people are expected to gain insurance coverage through the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, increasing the demand for care. At the same time, the Association of American Medical Colleges has projected a shortage of 90,000 physicians over the next ten years.

Legislative proposals in states throughout the country would rethink the role of nurses, nurse practitioners, pharmacists and other medical providers in caring for patients. In some states, nurse practitioners already can practice independently, without the supervision of a physician.

  • Kavita Patel, managing director for clinical transformation and delivery at the Engelberg Center for Health Care Reform at the Brookings Institution, and a former Obama administration official, will provide an overview of state activity and trends.
  • Geraldine "Polly" Bednash, executive director of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, will talk about the qualifications of nurses and nurse practitioners to care for patients in ways beyond what many states allow.
  • Reid Blackwelder, a Tennessee family physician and president-elect of the American Academy of Family Physicians, will discuss for the importance of sorting out the roles of physicians, nurses and other medical providers in the new team-based care environment.

Marilyn Werber Serafini of the Alliance will moderate the discussion.
