Program Summary

Primary care providers face complex challenges everyday in their busy practices. With rapid changes in medicine, staying informed about new developments can be equally challenging. Our goal in this CME activity is to help you hone your skills in the diagnosis and management of patients with varied conditions you are likely encountering in your practice.

We have recruited a faculty of well-known thought leaders and experienced teachers who, as clinicians themselves, understand the challenges you face every day as a primary care provider. Our faculty will be at your disposal to provide evidence-based science, current treatment guidelines, discuss challenging cases, and provide answers for you that can ultimately lead to better health care for your patients. The presentations will include several interactive cases and discussion sessions to keep you actively learning.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

1. Learn when clinical symptoms are indicative of functional disorders rather than disease; Become familiar with ongoing endocrine disorders in primary care patients; Understand pituitary function in health and disease; Differentiate among adrenal disorders of hypo and hyperfunction; Successfully treat “symptomatic” thyroid patients.
2. Describe nocturia’s impact on affected patients; Evaluate symptoms of Nocturia in affected patients in order to determine the source of symptoms; Assess current pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic nocturia management strategies; Differentiate the mechanisms of action, and safety and efficacy profiles of available and emerging therapies for nocturia.
3. Evaluate the physiological role of GLP-1 and associated implications for the treatment of patients with Diabetes; Review recommendations from current diabetes guidelines regarding the use of GLP-1 receptor agonists; Determine the advantages and disadvantages of individual GLP-1 receptor agonists in terms of efficacy, tolerability, dosing, frequency, and administration requirements; Assess the effect of GLP-1 receptor agonists on glycemic and extra-glycemic outcomes; Discuss strategies for reducing adverse effects in patients receiving GLP-1 receptor agonists.
4. Discuss the latest 2018 ACC/AHA Multisociety Guideline on the Management of Blood Cholesterol to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease; Incorporate current data surrounding non-statin therapy into secondary prevention treatment strategies for patients with the highest cardiovascular risk; Overcome barriers to access for PCSK9 monoclonal antibody therapy.
5. Recognize the association between hypertriglyceridemia and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD); Discuss the different biologic properties of omega-3 fatty acids and their impact on lipid levels; Identify patients who might benefit from triglyceride lowering; Utilize evidence-based approaches to manage patients with hypertriglyceridemia.
